According to the Harvard Business Review, some typical gender stereotypes reign true in the workplace; more men are found to be in leadership positions, despite the fact that women are more highly rated for their leadership skills.
A recent survey of 7,280 leaders — “generated from leaders in some of the most successful and progressive organizations in the world both public and private, government and commercial, domestic and international,” according to HBR — was conducted last year and showed:
“… at every level, more women were rated by their peers, their bosses, their direct reports, and their other associates as better overall leaders than their male counterparts…”
So why, then, are there still more male leaders than women? According to the study, 64 percent of the leaders are men, and a 78 percent of top managers are men. This could be because, according to HBR, women still maintain that: “We need to work harder than men to prove ourselves.”
With that kind of a gut feeling, women are doomed to feeling less secure and less confident about their decisions in the workplace. This could, in turn, be contributing to less women even considering taking the stand in a leadership position.
