*Several years ago, I was interviewing for a job at a new company. I went through an extensive phone interview, and then I met with the hiring manager — and all was great. Then, I was contacted to fly to the corporate head office to meet with the Senior Director for a final OK (all great), I was so excited! As I returned home I had an offer in my email Inbox. Excited, I accepted and gave notice to my current job. I found out that my start date would coincide with the organization’s national conference and my new boss thought it would be a great idea for me to fly to the conference and meet the team. I was thrilled, so here I was, my first day on the job, and I walked into meet my new boss, whom I had not sat face to face with since our first interview. I was anxious, so we agreed to meet for a quick coffee prior to the morning start. As I approached him, I noticed he looked a little strange; he kept saying my first name over and over like it would change something, but he was polite and then excused himself. Ten minutes later the Senior Director and the VP of HR approached me — this was exciting to be able to spend sometime with them, I thought — but not so. Apparently my new boss had confused me with the other candidate with the same first name and they were here to tell me. Suffice it to say, it was awkward.Today, I am the Senior VP of the same company, however, the man who would have been my first boss is no longer with the company.
Oh, Come On.
Each week, we’ll ask you to provide your own Oh, Come On moment for us to share with the world. Shoot an email to Looking@look-solutions.com with a story you have to tell of a coworker or someone you know in the workforce who did something utterly idiotic. We’ll then share it in a list in each week’s post (while absolutely honoring your desire for anonymity; all stories will be posted sans names), and at the end of each week, we’ll provide the person who gave us the best Oh, Come On moment with a $10 Starbucks gift card! After all, who doesn’t deserve a few cups of coffee for having put up with workplace idiocy? We all do.
Now it’s your turn! Send us your Oh, Come On moments and next thing you know, you’ll be feeling better, sipping coffee and smiling that you’re not the only one who’s had to deal with one or two ridiculous and absurd workplace situations.
